A dress fit for a princess by the fabulous Tunisian born French-Italian designer, Loris Azzaro. The professor-turned-designer began designing in 1962, and by 1967 he had launched the Loris Azzaro Couture label in Paris. This dress is of his 1970's label. Azzaro's sparkling clientele consisted of Europe's jet-set elite such as Sophia Loren, Jane Birkin, and Claudia Cardinale and was a favorite of performers such as Googoosh and Tina Turner. This is a rare Azzaro as he is typically known for his body-clinging jersrey silhouettes rather than the fit and flare. The silver bling and high neckline are quintessential Azzaro elements of his designs across the decades. The fit and flare silhouette, bubblegum pink, and atomic-age style starburst beading reads 1950's at first glance. The shimmering piece is a rare gem from the mid to late 1970's.
The high collar neckline is a thin band of clear sequins and silver beads. The high neckline is complemented by a sexy open back. The bodice is adorned with vertical rows of thin silver beads and silver sequins that cascade down to the fitted waistline band. The voluminous skirt is also adorned with thin rows of silver beads from the waist down to the hipline. The full length dress skirt consists of an inner layer of satin acetate with two outer layers of semi-sheer pink mousseline crepe. This dress comes with the original belt with a hook closure. Fully lined bodice. Metal zipper and hook closure down the back. Hook closure at the back of the neck.
There is a separate crinoline skirt consisting of three half-tiers of net tulle sewn onto a satin acetate base. The skirt hooks close at the waist with a petersham ribbon belt.
The pink is a smidge less warm and more neutral leaning than the photos with the 2nd photo capturing the color most accurately.
Great condition. Gentle signs of wear. The clear sequins at the collar have a slight tinge of yellowing commensurate with age. This piece comes with a packet of extra sequins and beads..
