The Spanish designer Paco Rabanne became known as "l'enfant terrible" (unruly child) of the 1960s French fashion world, but by 1968 some of the most famous women in the world were wearing his pieces. Early examples of his work like this dress are held mainly in museums around the globe. Pieces such as this rarely come to market. It is exceptional.
Traditional Rabanne aluminum metal discs in chrome-silver and matte gold alternate one after another at the bodice and skirt. Below the bust, a series of alternating rows of silver and gold cascade through the waist down to the high hipline to create this mesmerizing, museum-worthy design. The discs have been hand-linked together, one-by-one to create the distinct late 1960's mini silhouette. The bodice is square cut with the empowering stature of a gladiator's tunic. It is more common to find his metal works of this era in a singular color. This Paco Rabanne is an extraordinary find.
The dress does not have it's original cartouche. This piece was personally purchased by The Way We Wore owner, Doris Raymond, in Paris about 25-30 years at the auction house Druout, in association with the prestigious auctioneers Chombert & Sternbach.
Additional condition information available upon request. The discs are in good shape and none are bent out of shape.
