On July 19th 1965, the Italian designer Emilio Pucci was commissioned to design the stewardess outfits for Braniff International. Pucci named his collection “Gemini IV” after NASAs Gemini space program. Pucci created what he called the “Air Strip” which was comprised of layers that were to be removed in stages during flight. Within this collection was a reversible green gabardine coat, space bubble helmets, pillbox hats in Pucci geometric patterns, psychedelic scarves and matching space boots and gloves. The outer coat was meant to be “peeled off” in flight to reveal THIS raspberry pink suit set underneath. Underneath this suit was a thin jersey turtleneck. Braniff worked with Pucci until the early 1970s, however, this suit was the first prototype of the many variations of suits to come after.
Raspberry wool gabardine skirt suit. Velcro closure wrap skirt. The cropped jacket features a band collar with a brass O ring Talon zipper closure. Brass chain inside the jacket hem for weight. There are a few small moth holes.
The skirt and jacket are in the collections of the National Air and Space Museum and possibly the Chicago History Museum as well.
