Alexander McQueen 2004 F/W "Pantheon Ad Lucem" Runway Knit Grey Gown with Sash
From the Fall 2004 collection labeled "Pantheon Ad Lucem" translated to "Towards the Light" comes this incredible grey slinky gown. The 2004 show was notably not as theatrical as some previous shows but the garments (inspired by Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and ancient Roman garb) made a statement in their quiet simplicity. The nude and neutral toned pieces paired with the models androgynous and alien-esque makeup really transported the audience and pieces to an extraterrestrial height. The runway was a ring of light, alluding to the collection's title, but also an allusion to McQueen's personal hopes to transcend as a designer. This piece in many ways is the perfect blend of an ancient influence and an otherworldly form. The gorgeous knit details below the waist resemble gothic arches and spires and with their roots in the columns of Roman architecture... one can see the clear influence. The bulbous sleeves that gorgeously deform the otherwise slinky gown are strange and beautiful at once. McQueen almost creates an alien silhouette in this dress with its strangely elongated waist, arms and shoulders.
Owning a piece like this is owning a piece of fashion history. Sleek, modern and inspired by the towering columns of the past... this piece proves fashion can elevate you to new heights... even extraterrestrial heights.
