This gorgeous 1970's evening gown is an exceptionally sophisticated piece by the glamor-loving James Galanos. The bold pairing of maximalist prints and ornate beadwork feels just as fresh and alluring today as it would have 50 years ago.
The fitted bodice is embellished with horizontal striped bands of glass bugle and seed beads in a beautiful winter palette of burgundy, cobalt blue, pale pink, black, and deep iridescent violet. The dimensional beadwork creates an almost woven effect, with an extraordinary interplay of color, texture and light due to the specialized tambour embroidery technique evoking the extraordinary craftsmanship of D. Getson Eastern Embroidery, the celebrated Los Angeles embroidery atelier whose work was closely associated with Galanos and other leading American designers.
The bodice is beautifully contrasted by the vivid botanical print of the silk charmeuse skirt in shades of fuchsia red, pale pink, and black with cobalt blue detail. The full skirt is gently gathered for a fluid and elegant drape. There is a side slit up the skirt for ease of movement. The spaghetti straps are of the same printed silk charmeuse of the skirt. The gown closes with a hidden zipper down the back. The gown is fully backed in a lightweight, sheer black silk chiffon with carefully enclosed seams. True demi-couture quality.
The label is the 3rd GALANOS label, dating this piece roughly no later than 1977.
