From the breathtaking body decorations of native Americans to the oppressive austerity of their Puritan contemporaries' clothing, from the propriety of Victorian garb to free-and-easy Flapper elegance and the body-beautiful 1980s, this book looks at subjects such as the impact of Levi's riveted denim jeans, the drives for dress reform and the role of clothing in establishing and maintaining distinctions of class, race, age and gender.

Reviews

The common thread woven throughout this informative and well-illustrated history is that American clothing has evolved, not as a single entity, but from an array of influences on our multifaceted culture. Altered forever by the Industrial Revolution, "textiles came to dominate the American economy" as the styles and expectations of "the new work force of expectant capitalists" emerged. Ranging from the styles and influences of Native Americans to those of colonists, cowboys, movie stars, and sports heroes, and including the impact of "the bicycle, the factory, and the office" on dress reform, this anecdotal parade reflects the social, economic, and utilitarian factors behind the changes and the roles of clothing. Hall--author (e.g., Betty Parsons: Artist, Dealer, Collector , Abrams, 1991), painter, and former president of Rhode Island School of Design--reminds the reader how clothing styles affect everyone daily. A useful addition to Americana and clothing collections in academic libraries.
