Simply divine 1920s afternoon dress in a printed geometric and floral silk crepe chiffon. The silhouette is intrinsically bohemian in feel with its liberatingly comfortable and breathable shape. This dress was made for walking through French gardens for an afternoon on the Left Bank. The neckline plunges into a deep V with a diagonal row of ornamental covered buttons drawing the eye to the left side of the drop-waist where a decorative sash bow drapes. The airy bodice gives a slight blouson. The ballooned sleeves gather at the cuff with five functional domed covered buttons. The plunged neckline lays over an inner attached dress with a cream silk chiffon bodice. The inner dress is black from the natural waist to the skirt hem.
The romantic floral motif depicts an array of roses and their foliage against a white background printed on semi-sheer crepe silk. The same panel of white silk crepe is printed with a geometric tilted grid print. The graphic windowpane printed silk crepe is used throughout the sleeves, back, and the covered buttons. The skirt is composed of a black crepe silk with contrasting panels of the rose print silk crepe. Beautifully constructed with thoughtful detail such as hand-stitched shirring at the shoulders. No additional closures aside from the sleeve cuffs, pull-on style. Attached slip under the overdress.
Very good to great overall condition commensurate with 100+ year age and gentle wear. There is faint yellowing under the arms and water stains at the bodice of the cream silk underdress. Minor pinholes. Teeny hole on the seam at the shoulder. The black silk chiffon trim at the neckline has a minor abrasion and the inner slip should be reattached to the outer dress. Fits like a modern US Extra Large or Large.
