An eternally chic 1970s-does-late-1930s skirt suit from James Galanos' Spring 1973 Couture collection — the kind of piece that conjures smoky visions of Faye Dunaway in Chinatown (1974). A luxurious silk twill brings a precise geometric deco motif to life: a slashed and dotted taupe print set against a soft black background creates a dizzying effect throughout the two-piece ensemble. The short, wide peaked lapels nod to the tail end of the 1930s, exaggerated here for a '70s take on the era when women were joining the workforce and looking sharp doing it. The jacket nips subtly at the waist and hits at the high hip, backed in black silk, with envelope pockets as ornamentation over true pockets accessible from the side, and polished wood-and-horn shank buttons with a domed inset. The skirt sits at the natural waist and falls to the knee in precise knife pleats, the deco motif carefully aligned with each pleat, finished with a Petersham ribbon waistband, hidden zip closure, and an attached black slip skirt. Couture finish throughout — documented, archival vintage from an important American designer. In very good vintage condition.
