What Chanel was to France, many could say McCardell was to America. Its hard to overestimate the influence designer Claire McCardell had over the American tradition of women's fashion... between the tailoring and the implications of a feminist movement via clothing, her mark certainly is a clear one. Transforming the hyper-feminine and fluffy (think prom-like fit 'n flare of the 1940s and 50s), McCardell took the feminine form and made it into a flexible, belt to cinch and comfortable take on the upscale day dress. All together flattering, feminine but able to move with an American woman's ambitions; whether she chose to be a busy homemaker or a busy business woman, McCardell's dresses could fit many moulds. This dress is a prime example of elegance, sophistication and beautiful form. The tailoring on the chest with its matching downwards chevron stripes is gorgeous. The way the dress and its pattern meet at the waist at an arrow is incredible. We love the straight sleeve that accentuate the hip and give the illusion of a broader shoulder... this follows the 40's bold shoulder that inevitably empowered woman through stance. The dress is a soft cotton faille, its slightly nubby and gorgeously colored. No closures, made to be pulled over and comfortable, perhaps even loose. The belt is what brings the waistline into the spotlight. The sizing and tailoring make this a flexible piece for many body types, giving a democratic essence to McCardell's audience of women. Two pockets on either side are geometrically flattering. This is a near mint condition piece of American history. Highly collectable. Approximate size 8. Original production tag labeled size 10.
