Project Alabama 2000s Incredible Hand Crafted Faces Dress, Rare
Project Alabama is the limited edition collection of designer Natalie Chanin. With an intentional nod to the American craft of quilting bees, Project Alabama harnessed the gifted artisans in Alabama and in the early 2000s started this company. Project Alabama centered around a completely recycled line of materials and was considered "slow design" meaning it was all handmade and recycled materials. This dress in particular speaks for all the elements Chanin certainly wished to achieve via this line. The faces themselves are a combination of cut fabric overlaid on the base of the dress. One can tell how meticulously the overlay would have to be to create the intricate designs of faces for this dress. Additionally the borders of the cut fabric are hand dyed and completed with a raw stitch that adds to the charm of the piece. Per the label, Hugo & Elliot is mentioned- Artist and art collectors Hugo Guinness and Elliot Puckette were guests of Alabama Chanin's 2004 premiere of her 2005 line. We've included a photo courtesy of Getty Images that shows this meeting. It is unclear whether the couple designed aspects of this dress or if it was made for them, but regardless, this is special handmade piece. This is a true example of wearable art!! Over the head fit, no closures. Labeled a medium with a custom garment number. Excellent condition, no apparent flaws. Cotton exterior.
