This incredible piece of American fashion history was de-accessioned from the Brooklyn Museum. The gauzy and lightweight linen is a vibrant shade of coral orange with muted olive green-grey contrasting woven detailing. The practical day dress is of a classic 1950s collared shirt dress cut with a nipped waist that ties with an attached tie belt. Sweet and feminine fit-and-flare silhouette. The woven border trim and interwoven pattern down the center and at the skirt hem appears to be inspired by or that of an Indian saree influence, especially with the plaid detailing at the waist tie. The colors of this motif are considerably in line with Dorothy Liebes' philosophy of "a light, a bright, a dark," although this is only speculation. The semi-sheer linen is unlined. The dress closes with a series of snaps and hooks down the front center placket.

The garment is in overall good and wearable vintage condition with imperfections and discoloration throughout. There is a faint splatter on the left breast, a few spots throughout the lower portion of the dress skirt front and back, a larger faded discolored portion at the front left of the skirt, and a slight pink mark on the back. There is some wear to the threads at the seam where the skirt meets the waist. This rare piece is a unique Cashin with a curious motif in a fabric that she is not as urgently recognized for. Fits like a modern US 2.

Bonnie Cashin 1950s Brooklyn Museum Details

All measurements in inches (centimeters)

DESIGNER

Bonnie Cashin

ERA

1950s

PROVENANCE

Brooklyn Museum

CONDITION

GOOD VINTAGE

★★★☆☆

Measurement

Inches

CM

Bust

34 inches

86 cm

Waist

25 inches

64 cm

Hip

44 inches (open/full skirt)

112 cm

Length

41 inches

104 cm

      Bonnie Cashin 1950s.
