A museum worthy crossover of French Couture and midcentury stewardess style. This flight attendant uniform was designed by Pierre Balmain in 1965 for Trans World Airlines (TWA). Crafted from a beautiful pebble tweed wool in shades of pale teal, cadet blue, French blue, and heather grey. The handwritten name "Jeannie Laybourn for TWA" on the woven label adds a warm touch of provenance!

Along with the Pierre Balmain label, this coat also has the manufacturer's label, Briny Marlin. European Couturier's such as Pierre Balmain provided the design sketches, patterns, and styling specifications for airline uniforms.  Airlines such as TWA would then contract specialized American apparel firms to handle production such as the high-end women's outerwear manufacturer, Briny Marlin.  Briny Marlin was a trusted manufacturer frequently tapped for these prestigious aviation contracts. Having their label inside the coat signaled the garment was built to rigorous commercial tailoring standards using trusted, durable, and sophisticated materials.

The coat is lined in a luxurious French blue satin silk. Angled vertical welt pockets sit at either hip. Classic 1960's oversized buttons marbled deep teal blue buttons. In addition to the three button closure, there is a hidden snap button under the collar and an optional button placket at the lower quarter of the coat.

Aside from the impeccable provenance, this coat is stunningly tailored and composed of fine materials with such a sophisticated and quintessential 1960's silhouette. It's a no-brainer for a vintage collector of fashion history enthusiast.

 Great vintage condition.

There is a suit with matching hat as well that has a few moth holes and will be sent out for reweaving.  As an ensemble, it is extremely rare.  It is being offered separately.  Please inquire if you are interested in the matching items of the set.

Fits like a modern day US 8 or 10.
