It links fashion to such influential figures as Walker Evans and Robert Frank, and its implications transcend purely photographic history. Martin Harrison explores the role of magazine culture and the influences of art directors and editors, who have both created and reflected the mood and tones of the post-war decades. With the participation of the greatest figures in the field, from Richard Avedon and Irving Penn to Bruce Weber, he presents some of the most famous fashion photographs of all time, as well as many rare images. The involvement of artists such as Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe is also examined, whose work is peripheral to the fashion industry, yet whose influence pervades the look and climate of the times. The conclusion is that fashion photography is no longer dinstinct from the lineage of art photography and has now become central to an understanding of modern culture and vidual media.

From Library Journal

Photography as a fine art is often shaped by work done in the field of fashion. As well as peddling clothes in the pages of women's magazines, fashion photographers also influence and reflect society's attitudes and obsessions. Thus, the elegant, chic, and sophisticated fashion images of the postwar period gradually evolved into the decadent, soft-porn statements typical of the 1980s and 1990s. Art historian Harrison discusses the sociological issues behind these photographic trends by examining not only the impact made by fashion photographers but also the influence of certain powerful and creative art directors. In addition, he covers the often overlooked area of male fashion, attempting to explain why this subject has received such little serious attention. The author does well in identifying the models used in each fashion shot. (Most of us have forgotten that Anjelica Huston also worked as a model.) Unfortunately, there is little new material in this book--little that was not covered in the same author's Shots of Style (Faber & Faber, 1986), written as an exhibition catalog for the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1985. Although neither book is indexed (which makes anthologies of this size difficult to use), the earlier work lists the photographers alphabetically in the table of contents, while the present work does not, merely offering such vague chapter headings as "Inside" and "White Heat." Chicago readers will be disappointed that Victor Skrebneski's work is not included. This unrivaled and exceptional fashion resource is an immersive 150-year visual odyssey which tracks year-by-year, decade-by-decade, the ever-changing fashion landscape from 1850 to the present. With over 1400 photographs, almost all of which are rare—either never before published or rarely seen—we see fashion transform from the crinoline-supported billowing skirts and enormous ballooning sleeves of the late 19th century to the hemlines that fell along with the crashing stock market in 1929; through the shocking pants styles of the '30s and short A-line shifts of the '60s; through the designer-driven styles of the '80s, '90s, and today. In her introduction, Milbank explains the importance of photographs in that they “show what fashion illustrations cannot; what people actually wore, what exaggeration they adopted and the actual prevalence of style.”

While the focus is not on specific designers, notable designers are included, such as Charles Frederick Worth, Chanel, Poiret, Charles James, Karl Lagerfeld, Halston, Ungaro, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Rudi Gernreich, Celine, Geoffrey Beene, John Galliano, Issey Miyake, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Prada, and Dior. As the decades progress, photographs of designer fashion predominate, and many notable personalities are included like Princess Pauline de Metternich, considered the chicest woman in Europe in the 1860s; members of Queen Victoria's family, including her impeccably dressed daughter-in-law, Alexandra, Princess of Wales; opera stars renowned for their wardrobes, Christina Nillson, Adelina Patti; working women, athletes, dancers, actresses, courtesans, royal mistresses; feminists who chose to dress outside the fashion system like Civil War surgeon Dr. Mary Walker. Milbank states that “photographs show women courageous enough in their convictions to flout convention.”

As the book travels primarily through North America and Europe, presenting multiple images for each year, Milbank keenly illustrates how a certain style of dressing was ubiquitous--the same silhouette worn not only in France and the U.S. but also in India and Hungary. Along with tracking every major change in fashion, readers also see evolutions in hairstyles, jewelry, hat styles, outerwear, and footwear. The photographers range from the earliest well-known professionals like Disdéri, to charming amateur works as well as to the very beginning of street photography. Photographs of stylish women seen out and about span over 100 years, with recent examples from Mary Hilliard and Scott Schuman. FASHION: A Timeline in Photographs will be a welcome addition to the library of any fashion or costume designer as well as students of fashion, history, art history and photography, and is sure to become an instant classic!

About the Author

Caroline Rennolds Milbank is a fashion historian and the author of four books and has been a costume curator for exhibitions at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Clark Art Institute. Harold Koda is curator in charge at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Excellent condition, Hard Cover - Cover has little to no wear. At twenty, Beaton sent 'Vogue' London editors a snapshot of an undergraduate play at Cambridge; just months before the death at 75, he completed for French 'Vogue' two marathon photo assignments. In the years between British, French and American 'Vogue' published Beaton's finest work - not only his famous photographs, but his writings, drawings, designs and paintings.Drawing from this wealth of material, 'Beaton in Vogue' captures the whole of this enormously versatile, energetic, and prolific man. Organized around 44 of Beaton's articles for the magazine, this book profiles his wit and accomplishment as a writer and stylish chronicler, including in such pieces as 'Palm Beachistory,' 'Remembrance of Things Proust,' 'The Age of Artifice' -- of high society, culture, and style.Beaton's wry line drawings complement his sharp verbal sketches of the London and New York social seasons; his set and costume designs accompany accounts of his personal involvement with the worlds of theater and ballet. Beaton's own words become commentary for his renowned photographs - the stunning fashion shots; the haunting wartime images; the portraits of the famous, from a demure young Princess Elizabeth and other royals at home to a playful Greta Garbo, from Gertrude Stein and associates in Paris to Audrey Hepburn wearing Beaton's costumes for 'My Fair Lady.'Finally, Beaton's ebullient paintings are reproduced here in full color, including the late work Beaton triumphantly executed with his left hand after a stroke paralyzed his right side.Josephine Ross selects and introduced work by Beaton dating form the 1920s to the 1970s.

Excellent Condition, Hard Cover - Cover is in great condition.
