Why did all these varieties of lace develop as they did? When were they first made? Who made them? How were they marketed? Who bought them and wore them? These are some of the questions asked and answered in this complete and authoritative study.

No major book on lace has been published in English since the revised edition of Mrs Palliser's History of Lace appeared in 1902, yet the intervening period has seen enormous strides made in the study and understanding of the lace industry and of its relationship to the history of dress, to textiles and to the development of the decorative arts in general. In writing about lace in the context of fashionable dress and the development of styles and movements of taste, Santina Levey has drawn on extensive researches in these related fields. For lace only existed because fashionable dress required it and the many varieties only came into existence because the lace-makers were able to respond to changing demands. On the occasions when they did not or could not respond, whole sections of the industry collapsed.

This book covers the period from the early sixteenth-century to the First World War and is arranged chronologically to accommodate the underlying changes in fashionable dress and in the lace worn with it, but, within each chapter, the different types of lace are dealt with one by one. Greatest attention is given to the leading fashion laces but less important laces are also described; these range from simple domestic trimmings and cheap copies worn lower down the social scale, to 'fossilized' versions of once fashionable laces which continued to be made for peasant communities and for some conservative societies in the New World. The distinguishing technical features of each lace are described and particular attention is given to the close copies of the historical lace which were made in the late nineteenth century.

Although not designed as a how-to-do-it manual, the many enlarged details included in the illustrations and the magnified technical details in the Glossary would enable the experienced lace-maker to recreate a number of the patterns, while the rich variety of designs should be a source of inspiration to those working across the wholes spectrum of textile and flat-pattern designing.

The book is fully indexed and the technical terms and names used in the text are gathered together in a GLOSSARY for ease of reference. As well as peddling clothes in the pages of women's magazines, fashion photographers also influence and reflect society's attitudes and obsessions. Thus, the elegant, chic, and sophisticated fashion images of the postwar period gradually evolved into the decadent, soft-porn statements typical of the 1980s and 1990s. Art historian Harrison discusses the sociological issues behind these photographic trends by examining not only the impact made by fashion photographers but also the influence of certain powerful and creative art directors. In addition, he covers the often overlooked area of male fashion, attempting to explain why this subject has received such little serious attention. The author does well in identifying the models used in each fashion shot. (Most of us have forgotten that Anjelica Huston also worked as a model.) Unfortunately, there is little new material in this book--little that was not covered in the same author's Shots of Style (Faber & Faber, 1986), written as an exhibition catalog for the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1985. Although neither book is indexed (which makes anthologies of this size difficult to use), the earlier work lists the photographers alphabetically in the table of contents, while the present work does not, merely offering such vague chapter headings as "Inside" and "White Heat." Chicago readers will be disappointed that Victor Skrebneski's work is not included. What better way to celebrate than make a book? As founder and editor-in-chief Terry Jones writes, "A cross between a menu and a diary, Smile i-D maps the magazine's journey beyond the veneer of regular fashion." Now that most of us consider i-D a household name, it's interesting to be reminded that 20 years ago, street fashion was a nascent concept. Finding music and street culture more interesting than the traditional fashion world, Terry Jones abandoned his post as Art Director at British Vogue in 1977 to embark on a journey that has revolutionized not only the world of fashion magazines, but arguably fashion itself.

Blending fashion and social documentation, early issues of i-D (major collector items now) were 40 pages stapled together which sold for 50p. Journalistic in spirit and revolutionary in form, the magazine sought to show the world the gritty, real side of fashion as seen in the streets of London- kilts, mohawks, safety pins and all. When newsagents hesitated to sell i-D because of finger injuries resulting from the staples, early supporters helped by selling issues from the trunk of a Cadillac. Lots of teamwork and innovation brought i-D to the forefront of contemporary fashion culture and today it can be found at newsstands practically everywhere on the globe (minus the staples).

Smile i-D incorporates a single spread from each issue of the magazine thus far. It was also a time of intense artistic creativity, culminating in the great Paris Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925, and the subsequent spread of the celebrated Art Deco style. The radical innovations in Art Deco fashion and interior decoration demanded new textile designs, and, as the period progressed, fabrics for clothes, upholstery, wallpaper, and rugs increasingly reflected the modernism, elegance, and vibrancy of the movement. As the French artist Raoul Dufy, himself a brilliant fabric designer, wrote, "Paintings have spilled from their frames and stained our dress and our walls." This sumptuous new book invites the reader to discover the spectacular world of Art Deco fabrics, with examples by designers such as Delaunay, Ruhlmann, Henry, Marrot, Dufresne, Benedictus, and dozens more. Alain-Rene Hardy, a noted French expert in twentieth-century decorative arts, has searched through museum holdings, manufacturers' archives, and private collections to find hundreds of examples of both hand- and machine-made textiles, many of them never before published. From the lavish to the minimalist, from luxurious floral patterns to subtle geometric variations in color and texture, Art Deco textiles continue to enthrall us with their originality, complexity, and vivacity. 310 color illustrations.

About the Author

Alain-Rene Hardy is a former university lecturer and a specialist in 20th-century decorative art.

Great condition, Hard Cover - Book cover is in great condition. It links fashion to such influential figures as Walker Evans and Robert Frank, and its implications transcend purely photographic history. Martin Harrison explores the role of magazine culture and the influences of art directors and editors, who have both created and reflected the mood and tones of the post-war decades. With the participation of the greatest figures in the field, from Richard Avedon and Irving Penn to Bruce Weber, he presents some of the most famous fashion photographs of all time, as well as many rare images. The involvement of artists such as Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe is also examined, whose work is peripheral to the fashion industry, yet whose influence pervades the look and climate of the times. The conclusion is that fashion photography is no longer dinstinct from the lineage of art photography and has now become central to an understanding of modern culture and vidual media.

From Library Journal

Photography as a fine art is often shaped by work done in the field of fashion. This unrivaled and exceptional fashion resource is an immersive 150-year visual odyssey which tracks year-by-year, decade-by-decade, the ever-changing fashion landscape from 1850 to the present. With over 1400 photographs, almost all of which are rare—either never before published or rarely seen—we see fashion transform from the crinoline-supported billowing skirts and enormous ballooning sleeves of the late 19th century to the hemlines that fell along with the crashing stock market in 1929; through the shocking pants styles of the '30s and short A-line shifts of the '60s; through the designer-driven styles of the '80s, '90s, and today. In her introduction, Milbank explains the importance of photographs in that they “show what fashion illustrations cannot; what people actually wore, what exaggeration they adopted and the actual prevalence of style.”

While the focus is not on specific designers, notable designers are included, such as Charles Frederick Worth, Chanel, Poiret, Charles James, Karl Lagerfeld, Halston, Ungaro, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Rudi Gernreich, Celine, Geoffrey Beene, John Galliano, Issey Miyake, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Prada, and Dior. As the decades progress, photographs of designer fashion predominate, and many notable personalities are included like Princess Pauline de Metternich, considered the chicest woman in Europe in the 1860s; members of Queen Victoria's family, including her impeccably dressed daughter-in-law, Alexandra, Princess of Wales; opera stars renowned for their wardrobes, Christina Nillson, Adelina Patti; working women, athletes, dancers, actresses, courtesans, royal mistresses; feminists who chose to dress outside the fashion system like Civil War surgeon Dr. Mary Walker. Milbank states that “photographs show women courageous enough in their convictions to flout convention.”

As the book travels primarily through North America and Europe, presenting multiple images for each year, Milbank keenly illustrates how a certain style of dressing was ubiquitous--the same silhouette worn not only in France and the U.S. but also in India and Hungary. Along with tracking every major change in fashion, readers also see evolutions in hairstyles, jewelry, hat styles, outerwear, and footwear. The photographers range from the earliest well-known professionals like Disdéri, to charming amateur works as well as to the very beginning of street photography. Photographs of stylish women seen out and about span over 100 years, with recent examples from Mary Hilliard and Scott Schuman. FASHION: A Timeline in Photographs will be a welcome addition to the library of any fashion or costume designer as well as students of fashion, history, art history and photography, and is sure to become an instant classic!

About the Author

Caroline Rennolds Milbank is a fashion historian and the author of four books and has been a costume curator for exhibitions at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Clark Art Institute. Harold Koda is curator in charge at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Excellent condition, Hard Cover - Cover has little to no wear. Replete with 100 color photographs of models and celebrities wearing the designer's exuberant clothes, this lavish book, which includes brief descriptions of Scaasi's working methods and accounts of his friendships with his affluent clients, provides a tantalizing glimpse of the world of high fashion.

ISBN: 0-8478-1987-6

Great Condition, Hardcover - Book is in Excellent condition. The fashions showcase renowned designers from the past and present who have contributed their unique touch to resort wear, including Claire McCardell, Michael Kors, Rodarte, and many more. From Palm Beach to Montego Bay to St. Tropez, this book celebrates resort wear’s vibrant history with an allure that extends beyond runways to the most exotic, far-flung destinations.

"Synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.

About the Author

Caroline Rennolds Milbank is a fashion historian and the author of the books Couture, New York Fashion, and The Couture Accessory. It is a form of possession, this belonging to one another." This statement sums up the design philosophy of one of this country's most innovative couturiers. For more than 30 years, Beene, a one-time medical student from Louisiana and an eight-time winner of the prestigious Coty Award, has revolutionized feminine fashion, liberating women from the "conventional mechanics of dress" by removing paddings and interlinings, zippers and fasteners from his lighter-than-air jumpsuits and gowns. He has also turned the traditional fashion show upside down, abandoning runways and star models in favor of art installations and dancers whose leaps and grand jetes display the luxurious freedom of movement his clothes allow. This beautiful volume, lavishly illustrated with 120 photos by the world's great fashion photographers, is not a chronological retrospective of Beene's work (although his structured 1960s dresses are presented) but rather an aesthetic appreciation of his artistry. Following an introduction by Richard Martin and Harold Koda, curators of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, fashion journalist Cullerton examines Beene's unique qualities?his geometric designs, his bold use of color, his juxtaposition of luxurious fabrics with the humble (satin with gingham). You may be familiar with the beautiful and colorful zig-zag patterned knit fabric that is the epitome of a Missoni design. Every fashion lover knows that a Missoni piece is a necessity for a fun summer day of shopping, strolling, or beach time. Here’s how this unique and versatile fashion house has gotten to where it is today. The Missoni design house is a family owned and operated business and always has been. Ottavio and Rosita Missoni always had a taste for fashion and started to experiment with knitwear in the early 1950’s. They developed their first Missoni-labeled garments in 1958, which were beautiful striped shirt dresses that became popular in Italian department stores. The signature zig-zag motif was created in 1962 when the couple was ready to move on from the stripes. After discovering Raschel machines that knit in a zig-zag pattern, they experimented with shawls and then started on clothing. After years of fashion shows and attempting to gain exposure, Missoni was finally offered an in-store boutique in the New York City Bloomingdale’s department store. The 1970’s were a booming time for the couple and a men’s collection as well as a fragrance were introduced at the end of the era. The talented duo is recognized for their fashionable designs with several exhibitions around the world. The Missoni designs were also featured in Vogue and the house started designing flip flops and other beach-themed apparel. The 2000’s brought about a whirlwind of celebrity attention. Missoni could be found on stars like Madonna, Kate Bosworth, and Ashley Judd. The fashion house designs an affordable line for Target fashion and home. This beautiful book is filled with dozens of photos and illustrations of the very distinctive Missoni fashions.

"Synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.

Printed in Italy.

Great condition. Ranging from the styles and influences of Native Americans to those of colonists, cowboys, movie stars, and sports heroes, and including the impact of "the bicycle, the factory, and the office" on dress reform, this anecdotal parade reflects the social, economic, and utilitarian factors behind the changes and the roles of clothing. The following year, French couturier Louis Reart borrowed the name and applied it to a bathing costume for women. Breaking with decades of boring conformity, Reart dared to 'undress' women's bodies in order to better emphasize what remained clothed -- albeit in tiny wisps of material. By taking up the bikini as popular beachwear, women also found themselves thinking differently about their bodies. An ideal of perfection was many times reinforced by the appearance on the cinema screen of such stars as Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Ursula Andress, all of whom featured in bikinis that accentuated their own gloriously curvaceous contours. More than a bathing costume, the bikini made its own contribution during the 1970s to the sexual revolution, to the changing relationship between men and women in general.

This book investigates the history of the bikini as a way of noting the change in the perception of women by society, as women have regained responsibility for the way they look and laid claim once more to full sexual equality. A wealth of pictures throughout the book illustrates this womanly progression step-by-step over more than 50 years.

"Synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.

About the Author

German and Slavic scholar, Patrick Alac has published many articles in several German fashion magazines.
