On View: Robert Mapplethorpe at The Getty Center

From October 23, 2012 through March 24, 2013 Robert Mapplethorpe’s highly stylized explorations of gender, race and sexuality will be on display at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. In Focus: Robert Mapplethorpe presents works, from his early mixed-media objects to portraits, nudes and still lifes, that were jointly acquired by the Getty Museum and LACMA from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, New York City.

Herb Ritts: L.A. Style at the Getty

At the Getty Center, through August 26, 2012, is the much-talked about exhibition, Herb Ritts: L.A. Style. The photographer, known for modernizing the nude and transforming celebrities into icons, often focused on Los Angeles for his stunning portraits. From the bright sunlight to locations in the desert at at the beach in Malibu (pictured), Ritts always possessed an innovative approach to fashion.

The exhibition explore’s Ritts’ career, including a selection of previously unpublished photographs, and his directorial projects. His famed celebrity portraits, such as Richard Gere, San Bernadino (1977) and Madonna, Hollywood (1986), are also included. After its showing at the Getty, the exhibition will be on view at the Cincinnati Art Museum from October 6, 2012 through December 30, 2012, and at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Florida from March 1, 2013 through June 2, 2013.
