What A Start to 2013!

Sunday, February 3rd, 2013

This year is going to be amazing for The Way We Wore®!  On March 7th, at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time, the Smithsonian Channel will premiere “LA Frock Stars”  – a show based on my business and adventures in the fashion world, seeking beautiful and sometimes rare garments from everywhere. I am thrilled to share my exploits on such a prestigious network!  It should be an exciting and educational trip for everyone watching and will include an awesome roster of clients from celebrities to stylists and clothing designers, as well the wonderful local people that have supported us since we relocated to LA.

Speaking of awesome clients- we recently had the amazingly talented Adele in for a private marathon fitting/shopping spree.  Adele will more than likely add to her growing collection of awards with her nomination of “Skyfall”.  And we are thrilled to have supplied her with many fabulous vintage treasures over the years.

Our semi-annual sale started this past Friday and lasts the entire month of February.  It is our MOST OUTRAGEOUS SALE ever!  There are 100s of items priced at $99 or less.  I need to make room for my upcoming buying season and my first buying trip is just a week away so stay tuned to find out what fabulous treasures I have uncovered this time.

We look forward to seeing you soon and thank you!

L.A. Frocks Stars: A New TV Series Featuring Vintage Clothing Guru Doris Raymond

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

From The PR Desk:

Smithsonian Channel has greenlit the original series L.A. FROCK STARS, a window into the world of high-end vintage fashion. The six-episode unscripted series, a first for Smithsonian Channel, which is set to premiere Thursday, March 7 at 8.pm., focuses on the doyenne of Hollywood vintage, Doris Raymond, and her Los Angeles store The Way We Wore®.

Raymond is prized for her tenacity in finding hidden gems and for her encyclopedic knowledge of designer fashion. The Way We Wore® is a destination for Hollywood’s modern-day glitterati as well as high-profile stylists such as George Kotsiopoulis and celebrity stylist Jennifer Rade. Raymond has also supplied wardrobe for numerous film and television productions including Titanic, Boardwalk Empire, Casino and W.E.

L.A. FROCK STARS will offer an inside look at the quest for the perfect dress. Raymond and her colorful staff assist an endless stream of clients, all with unique needs, from Mel Ottenberg, Rihanna’s stylist on the hunt for a Grammy’s outfit to Lou Eyrich, the costume designer of Glee in search of fashions for an episode featuring songs from Phantom of the Opera.

Raymond has been buying and selling vintage clothing for over thirty years. Her boutique sells women’s fashions from the 1900’s to the ‘80’s, ranging from high profile designers to the world’s most iconic fashion figures such as Halston, Dior and more.

“Doris Raymond is an American original. Her eye for vintage fashion is respected by some of the biggest names in fashion and show business,” said David Royle, Executive Vice President, Programming and Production, Smithsonian Channel. “She not only knows how to help a star make a splash on the red carpet, she also has a gift for identifying some of the world’s most exciting and intriguing historical artifacts. The Smithsonian Institution has long maintained a collection of historical fashions, most notably the First Lady dresses. We are delighted to bring L.A. FROCK STARS to our viewers.”

Dita Von Teese Launches Clothing Line – Uses a 1930′s Gown from TWWW as Inspiration!

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

Burlesque bombshell Dita Von Teese launched her namesake clothing line last week inspired by some of her favorite vintage clothing. The line consists of five amazing pieces, including a trench coat with a full skirt (very Dior!) and the “Bon Bon dress,” a floral bias cut gown inspired by a 1930′s gown she purchased from us!  The line ranges from size 2 through 16 and are priced between $575 and $995.

Below is an image of The Way We Wore’s very own Doris Raymond with Dita Von Teese in the “Bon Bon dress” posing in front of the inspiration! Shop our 1930′s here!

Doris Raymond Models This Fall’s Big Trend- The Oversized Coat!

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Turn up the volume vintage lovers! This fall it’s all about the oversized coat! Chloé, Jill Sander, and Balenciaga set the tone on the runways with the new must have outerwear- oversized coats in classic shapes. The exaggerated lapels and spacious swing cuts beg for balance; we recommend pairing these with slim fitting skirts or skinny trousers.

Pictured above are some of our favorites by Karl Lagerfeld, Cristobal Balenciaga (attribution), and Thierry Mugler. Feel free to call or email with inquiries!

Doris Raymond Procures Motherlode of French 1920′s items!

Saturday, August 11th, 2012

Last week Doris dazzled us with one of her famous “Dog and Pony” shows. After she returns from a buying trip, she always unpacks the treasures in front of the entire staff. We sit encircling her two enormous suitcases like a campfire and we cover our eyes between each piece so we can get the full impact of the big reveal.

We “Oooh” and “Aaah,” try on the pieces that are our favorites and snap pics, and when she can- she gives us the provenance of each masterfully hand embroidered and meticulously hand-beaded garment. Trust me, if you’re a vintage lover,  it’s better than Christmas!

Look out for images of  new 1920′s flapper dresses, mantles and opera coats!

Check out our amazing selection of  1920′s here! But, beware! You won’t be able to resist these beauties!!

40 Dresses in 40 Minutes!

Monday, July 16th, 2012

It’s a typical day at The Way We Wore boutique: walk-in customers, brides, party- goers, red carpet requests, and appointments with designers. Doris stepped out for a bit, we all just assumed it was to run a few errands.

After about forty minutes she popped back in, grinning from ear to ear, her tiny frame hidden beneath armfuls of gowns! And that was just the beginning! Her SUV was overflowing with sequins, lace, brocade, taffeta, and rhinestones; rolling hills of maribou, chiffon, and tulle in delicate pastels and luxurious jewel tones. We were stunned! A 1950′s cocktail dress bonanza in under an hour! The pieces were acquired from a Hollywood actress known for her work in “Gone With the Wind”. 40 designer gowns including Balmain, Nettie Rosenstein and Sophie of Saks… all in about 40 minutes!

Stay tuned for images of our new pieces and shop the best of our 1950′s selection here!
