Louis Vuitton’s Edwardian-Inspired Hats Take Center Stage in Fall 2012 Campaign

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

Louis Vuitton’s accessories are arguably the most coveted facet of the brand. Their Fall 2012 collection featured beautiful high-waisted silhouettes and sumptuous coats, and the buzz has been surrounding the accessories; namely the modern-day Edwardian hats. Marc Jacobs exaggerated the bucket shape while borrowing trims and accoutrements from the period, like feathers, ribbon, and brooches.

The Way We Wore has an extensive collection of vintage hats including cloches, fascinators, turbans, wide brims, Gibsons and more. Pictured below are two of our most fabulous Edwardian hats. Stop by and shop our chapeaus!

80′s Revival: The Illusion Trend

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

Zoe Kravitz stunned on the red carpet last week for The Dark Knight Rises premiere in New York City. Though not for the faint of heart, the illusion trend has been making it’s rounds on red carpets and runways alike.

Plunging peekaboos and sultry sheer inserts were favorites of designers during the decadent 1980′s. To modernize the trend,
a sexy look like this is best paired with sleek hair and minimal jewelry. Pictured above are two of our favorite illusion gowns from the 1980′s by Thierry Mugler and Carolyne Roehm!

40 Dresses in 40 Minutes!

Monday, July 16th, 2012

It’s a typical day at The Way We Wore boutique: walk-in customers, brides, party- goers, red carpet requests, and appointments with designers. Doris stepped out for a bit, we all just assumed it was to run a few errands.

After about forty minutes she popped back in, grinning from ear to ear, her tiny frame hidden beneath armfuls of gowns! And that was just the beginning! Her SUV was overflowing with sequins, lace, brocade, taffeta, and rhinestones; rolling hills of maribou, chiffon, and tulle in delicate pastels and luxurious jewel tones. We were stunned! A 1950′s cocktail dress bonanza in under an hour! The pieces were acquired from a Hollywood actress known for her work in “Gone With the Wind”. 40 designer gowns including Balmain, Nettie Rosenstein and Sophie of Saks… all in about 40 minutes!

Stay tuned for images of our new pieces and shop the best of our 1950′s selection here!

Raf Simons Celebrates Dior’s Vintage Roots

Sunday, July 15th, 2012

The fashion world waited on pins and needles (pun intended) to see what would become of the house of Dior. Belgium designer Raf Simons pleased the masses with a delightful modern approach to couture.

As vintage lovers, we cheer on his return to classic silhouettes. The collection was very much influenced by the early designs of Christian Dior, but definitely reflect Mr. Simons’ aesthetic as well.

Not a season goes by that designers don’t reference vintage silhouettes, trims, and patterns (many times sourced from us!) but what makes this collection so special is that it’s more of a marriage than a mirroring. The silhouette of a 1950′s circle skirt was given a second life as a peplum blouse paired with cigarette pants- genius!

Pictured above is our lifetime Christian Dior tweed suit circa 1955 that may have inspired Simons’ tweed pieces, like the one pictured on the right. We love them both! Love triangle, anyone?

Iconic Designer: Kenneth Jay Lane

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

American costume jewelry designer Kenneth Jay Lane began his career as a shoe designer for Delman and Christian Dior before designing fun and flashy baubles. The Detroit native studied at University of Michigan and the Rhode Island School of Design and went on to design for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Vreeland, and Audrey Hepburn.

His motto: “Elegance, good taste and luxury never go out of style” has held true. While he gained popularity in the early 1960s, KJL continues to be relevant in the fashion world, and is still sold at stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Net-a-Porter, and Bloomingdale’s, among others.

Pictured at right are Kenneth Jay Lane oversize coral button earrings from the 1980s available from The Way We Wore.
