Doris Raymond Introduces Proenza Schouler to Alex and Lee for Collaboration

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Design collaborations are nothing new but few generate as much critical acclaim and excitement as Proenza Schouler’s has with “cult-loved” jewelry label Alex and Lee on their Resort collection for 2012.

The designers, (clients of The Way We Wore), were introduced to these esoteric jewelery designers by none other than Doris Raymond- who first met the original creatives Alex Mate (now deceased) and Lee Brooks at the Sausalito Flea Market in the 1970′s. Since then Doris had always collected their pieces here-and-there but it wasn’t until she hit the “mother-lode”, a fairly large series of one-of-a-kind killer necklaces, bracelets and brooches, early last year that she knew she had something incredibly meaningful for the right buyer. The rest they say is fashion history.

To learn more about the collaboration, visit Racked for an interview with Lee Brooks and Greg Frankel the duo behind Alex and Lee.

Iconic Designer: Adele Simpson

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

A leader in the postwar fashion boom, Adele Simpson was known for taking French couture an American ready-to-wear interpretation. Pat Nixon, Barbara Bush and Lady Bird Johnson were fans, along with retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Bonwit Teller.

Color coordinated dresses and jackets and chic coats were some of her more popular pieces. Prior to becoming a designer, Simpson was a child vaudeville performer, sharing the stage with the likes of Milton Berle. She died in 1995, at the age of 91.

Tom Ford’s Fall 2011 Collection: A True Work of Genius

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

We can’t say much about Tom Ford that hasn’t already been said but that won’t stop us from saying it – he is a genius. The master of uber-chicdom just released a video on his website showcasing his highly anticipated Fall 2011 collection and wow, is it gorgeous! The dramatic body-conscious silhouettes, rich jewel-tone colours, use of lace, texture and fur is to us, a modern interpretation of classic Yves St. Laurent meets Valentino circa 1970′s. As Doris Raymond would say, “If these two fashion masters had a baby, it would be Tom Ford.”

Since his return to fashion, the designer has been keeping his cards close to his chest. He now requires that all media sign non-disclosures at his runway presentations and places an embargo on the release of any imagery before releasing it himself.

This master of storytelling, both verbal and visceral, keeps us riveted which is why we’re looking forward to “Visionaries: Tom Ford” the upcoming documentary that offers “a personal look into one of fashion’s greatest minds,” coming to the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on June 24th.

As for Jenny Packham, is it possible she has now become a future fashion collectible?

Nancy Pelosi is “On-Trend” in Vintage Mugler

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Nancy Pelosi caught the attention of the fashion world when she arrived to a recent State Dinner wearing vintage Thierry Mugler evening suit.  The designer, one of Lady Gaga’s favorites, is known for his signature style of “a timeless equilibrium between classicism and modernity” as perfectly represented in Ms. Pelosi’s ensemble, circa 1980′s.

Though the world may not agree on all things political, we think that the 71-year-old Ms. Pelosi definitely nailed the politics of fashion. (The Cut)
