The History of the Bikini

The Met Museum’s Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History has an excellent essay, The Bikini, which covers all of the two-piece’s incarnations over the years starting from the 1940s. Fashion designer Jacques Heim and mechanical engineer Louis Reard both claim to be the first to launch the bikini on the French Riviera in the summer of 1946.
