Iconic Designer: Pauline Trigere

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Paris-born Pauline Trigere learned to sew around age 10, by helping her dressmaker mother. After learning of the New York fashion scene, she moved to the U.S. in 1937, when she was just 25. After working for various designers, she opened her own fashion house with a collection of 12 dresses  in 1942, and went on to find major success.

She once famously said, “Fashion is what people tell you to wear, style is what comes from your own inner thing.” Trigere, who died at age 93 in 2002, was noted for her impeccable tailoring and construction skills.

Iconic Designer: Norman Norell

Friday, June 4th, 2010

American designer Norman Norell was born at the turn of the century and in 1922, and went on to study at Parsons School of Design and Pratt Institute before he joined the New York studio of Paramount Pictures, making costumes for the Ziegfeld Follies, Cotton Club and silent film stars. Between 1928 and 1940, Norell designed for Hattie Carnegie, a legendary tastemaker, and in 1941, went into business with Anthony Traina, designing under Traina-Norell. From 1960 until his death in 1972, his label was simply Norman Norell. The Indiana native’s impeccable workmanship led many to call Norell the “rival of Paris.”
