The Met Goes Punk!

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Mother of all things D.I.Y, studded, slashed, and repurposed, the Punk movement is finally having a proper moment in the limelight. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced it’s 2013 exhibit “Punk: Chaos to Couture.” The press release described the exhibit as:

Organized thematically, gallery sections will include Rebel Heroes, which will evoke the New York and London music scenes of the mid-1970s, focusing on iconic punk bands such as The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and The Clash.  The Couturiers Situationists gallery will examine Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s visual codification of punk through the merging of social realism and artistic expression, featuring fashion and graphics they produced for their boutique at 430 King’s Road in London, including Let it Rock, SEX, and Seditionaries.

Pavilions of Anarchy and Elegance will juxtapose punk designs with haute couture creations, focusing on customization and hand craftsmanship.  Punk Couture will explore high fashion’s engagement with punk hardware such as studs, spikes, chains, zippers, padlocks, safety pins, and razor blades.  D.I.Y. Style will highlight the impact of punk’s bricolage ethos on high fashion, including the use of recycled materials from trash culture. La Mode Destroy will examine the effect of punk’s rip-it-to-shreds attitude via torn and shredded garments associated with deconstructionist fashions.

We’re excited to see what the exhibit inspires in this year’s Met Gala red carpet looks. Co-hosted by Riccardo Tisci and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara, we forsee studs, safety pins, frayed hems, and deconstructed decadence! The exhibit runs from May 9th through August 11th 2013.

Raf Simons Celebrates Dior’s Vintage Roots

Sunday, July 15th, 2012

The fashion world waited on pins and needles (pun intended) to see what would become of the house of Dior. Belgium designer Raf Simons pleased the masses with a delightful modern approach to couture.

As vintage lovers, we cheer on his return to classic silhouettes. The collection was very much influenced by the early designs of Christian Dior, but definitely reflect Mr. Simons’ aesthetic as well.

Not a season goes by that designers don’t reference vintage silhouettes, trims, and patterns (many times sourced from us!) but what makes this collection so special is that it’s more of a marriage than a mirroring. The silhouette of a 1950′s circle skirt was given a second life as a peplum blouse paired with cigarette pants- genius!

Pictured above is our lifetime Christian Dior tweed suit circa 1955 that may have inspired Simons’ tweed pieces, like the one pictured on the right. We love them both! Love triangle, anyone?

Tom Ford’s Fall 2011 Collection: A True Work of Genius

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

We can’t say much about Tom Ford that hasn’t already been said but that won’t stop us from saying it – he is a genius. The master of uber-chicdom just released a video on his website showcasing his highly anticipated Fall 2011 collection and wow, is it gorgeous! The dramatic body-conscious silhouettes, rich jewel-tone colours, use of lace, texture and fur is to us, a modern interpretation of classic Yves St. Laurent meets Valentino circa 1970′s. As Doris Raymond would say, “If these two fashion masters had a baby, it would be Tom Ford.”

Since his return to fashion, the designer has been keeping his cards close to his chest. He now requires that all media sign non-disclosures at his runway presentations and places an embargo on the release of any imagery before releasing it himself.

This master of storytelling, both verbal and visceral, keeps us riveted which is why we’re looking forward to “Visionaries: Tom Ford” the upcoming documentary that offers “a personal look into one of fashion’s greatest minds,” coming to the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on June 24th.

Nancy Pelosi is “On-Trend” in Vintage Mugler

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Nancy Pelosi caught the attention of the fashion world when she arrived to a recent State Dinner wearing vintage Thierry Mugler evening suit.  The designer, one of Lady Gaga’s favorites, is known for his signature style of “a timeless equilibrium between classicism and modernity” as perfectly represented in Ms. Pelosi’s ensemble, circa 1980′s.

Though the world may not agree on all things political, we think that the 71-year-old Ms. Pelosi definitely nailed the politics of fashion. (The Cut)

Iconic Designer: Zandra Rhodes
