Tonight’s the Night to ‘Frock On’!

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

The Way We Wore’s exciting new docu-series “L.A. Frock Stars” premieres on the Smithsonian Network tonight at 8PM, and the positive buzz is already percolating!

The Los Angeles Times’ Adam Tschorn gave the show a dazzling review, highlighting Doris Raymond’s “near-encyclopedic knowledge of vintage”:

“And that’s really ‘Frock Stars’’ strong suit—serving up a veritable mother lode of fashion factoids…set against the glittering backdrop of the Hollywood dream factory.”

Highlighting the star power of TWWW’s fabulous collection, the New York Times’ Neil Genzlinger said, “Through it all, the clothes themselves provide a dizzying, daffy tour of the last century…In this engaging series, the clothes really are the main attraction.”

With the premiere of “Dukes of Melrose,” Bravo’s new series chronicling Decades, Inc. owners Cameron Silver and Christos Garkinos’ Los Angeles vintage-consignment business, Hollywood Reporter’s Allison Keene notes how the two shows function as a complementary pair.

“[Both The Way We Wore and Decades] are little sartorial havens where, as Raymond’s store manager [Sarah Bergman] says, ‘Being a shopaholic is not a secret shame, but a public blessing.’”

Lynn Elber, a wonderful reporter for Newsday who spent an afternoon with us in our L.A. boutique, praises “L.A. Frock Stars’” insight into Raymond’s lifelong passion:

“’L.A. Frock Stars’ is both a fashionista’s delight and a chance to see passion at work with Raymond, who’s made finding and selling great old duds a quest for more than 30 years.”

Clea Kim March’s review for The Advocate highlights 5 Reasons to Watch L.A. Frock Stars and gives a special nod to the happy union of the Raymond, the clothes, our brilliant clients such as Dita Von Teese and Adele, and The Way We Wore’s fabulous staff.

March said, “Raymond’s fresh approach on fashion, in which she explains it in such a comforting, passionate and non-know-it-all way, makes us want to learn more.”

Finally, visit Racked L.A. for a sneak peek into the incredible “L.A. Frock Stars” premiere party that was hosted by the Smithsonian Network at LACMA on Tuesday night!

Fall 2013 Fashion Trends Take Their Cue from the 1940′s

Carolina Herrera: Photo Style.Com

Being fashion forward this year means going back…way back to the 1940′s. The decade that ushered in the idea of function in fashion was heavily referenced on the runways during New York Fashion Week.  There were curvy nipped-in waists from Band of Outsiders (a client of The Way We Wore®), extreme shoulder pads at Thom Browne and drop dead gorgeous film noir femmes at Carolina Herrera. Here a look at some of our favorite looks for the season.

What A Start to 2013!

Sunday, February 3rd, 2013

This year is going to be amazing for The Way We Wore®!  On March 7th, at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time, the Smithsonian Channel will premiere “LA Frock Stars”  – a show based on my business and adventures in the fashion world, seeking beautiful and sometimes rare garments from everywhere. I am thrilled to share my exploits on such a prestigious network!  It should be an exciting and educational trip for everyone watching and will include an awesome roster of clients from celebrities to stylists and clothing designers, as well the wonderful local people that have supported us since we relocated to LA.

Speaking of awesome clients- we recently had the amazingly talented Adele in for a private marathon fitting/shopping spree.  Adele will more than likely add to her growing collection of awards with her nomination of “Skyfall”.  And we are thrilled to have supplied her with many fabulous vintage treasures over the years.

Our semi-annual sale started this past Friday and lasts the entire month of February.  It is our MOST OUTRAGEOUS SALE ever!  There are 100s of items priced at $99 or less.  I need to make room for my upcoming buying season and my first buying trip is just a week away so stay tuned to find out what fabulous treasures I have uncovered this time.

We look forward to seeing you soon and thank you!

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Paris Couture Show: A 1960s/1980s Mashup!

Friday, February 1st, 2013

Writer Tim Blanks lovingly referred to Gaultier’s inspiration for his Spring 2013 Couture collection as the “Real Housewives of Mumbai.” From the models’ gold-painted feet to the gypsy-esque layering of jewelry, an exciting take on ethnic was served on a gilded platter. While the sixties seem to be the decade du jour, Gaultier took it a step further by combining psychedelic stripes and  hostess gown silhouettes with wide belts, voluminous bomber jackets, and his famous cone bra turned gown. We love seeing the powerful proportions of the decadent 1980s revisited! Shop our favorite 1980s fashion here!

Balmain Pre-Fall 2013 Gives a Fresh Take on 1970′s Fashion

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

WWD reports that the starting point for the Balmain Pre-Fall collection was a photo of the ever-enchanting Diana Vreeland. After her inspiring documentary The Eye Has to Travel, we predict that her influence will be palpable this season among other designers as well. The Balmain pre fall collection was inspired by Vreeland-esque decadence of the 1970′s, but not so much like a Rachel Zoe or even a Saint Laurent. Olivier Rousteing brought a fresh perspective to the oft-referenced era. No-nonsense harem pants meet feminine embroidery; strong jackets meet delicate Asian design. We’re inspired to mix and match our vintage Lurex pieces in new ways! With leather, with velvet, seems like we can’t go wrong in the Balmain book!

Star of Beasts of the Southern Wild, 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis is the youngest actress ever to be nominated for an Oscar. She already has a Critic’s Choice Award under her belt and a promising award season ahead. We can’t get enough of her colorful red carpet style and this girl is not afraid to accessorize! She’s been spotted (pun intended) with plush puppy purses  in every color by Poochie & Co. TWWW always encourages individuality on the red carpet, so dig out all your minaudières, give your evening look a little more personality, and make us proud!

Get the Look: Anne Hathaway in Tom Ford

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013

Anne Hathaway delivered a high fashion moment a few days ago for the New York premiere of Les Miserables. The Tom Ford silk taffeta gown from his Spring 2013 collection was pretty business-as-usual from the front, but it was the 1960′s capeish-bussle that really brought the drama! Get Anne’s red carpet look with our vintage Bill Blass Silk Taffeta Gown available here!

“Diane von Furstenburg and the Tale of the Empress’s New Clothes”

Monday, December 31st, 2012

Writer Camilla Morton has made an adorable illustrated series combining fairytales with the lives of some of our favorite contemporary designers. She’s already blended Christian Lacroix and Sleeping Beauty and Manolo Blahnik and the Tale of the Elves and the Shoemaker.

Morton tells Fashionista.com, “Diane is about empowering women – which is the exact opposite of the parallel tale so I liked the twist. The Empress is a revamped version of The Emperor’s New Clothes, which is the story of a young girl who was swindled and bamboozled by fashion and ends up going out without her dignity. Sometimes looking at the crazy fashions people wear, it does make me think of those crooks in The Emperor’s New Clothes and wonder if someone is having a laugh… Diane is the woman whose mantra ‘be a woman wear a dress’ encouraged women to do just that – she has an amazing story.”

We’re also very happy to report… the story includes a prince!
